It’s time to personalize your site! Hooray! The following should help you with a few housekeeping things to get started:
If you’d like to edit any of your navigation in the future, you can do it via Appearance > Menus > Select your Menu (if more than one) and use the left panel to add menu items. You can see more info on how to do that here.
You’ll want to navigate to Appearance > Widgets and go through EVERY widget in every single space listed. I will import and setup most of your widgets during the project process, but you’ll be able to go back through and set the correct categories, text, titles, etc for each of these widgets to be unique for your site (if needed).
Set Featured Images
Chances are at this point, you likely have a few spaces on your site needing some images, so you’ll want to be sure to set a featured image for your Pages and your Posts. On WordPress, they call your first image shown throughout the site a featured image. They should automatically show up for whatever your first image of your blog post is. If they do not, you’ll need to manually set them. I’ve installed a plugin called “Quick Featured Images” to help if this is the case. You can add featured images going to Posts (via the dashboard) and on the far right you’ll see “Add Featured Image” > Click, upload and/or select the image you want > Save.
Some of my clients prefer to have a different sized image in this space, or something without text (for example if you have pinterest sized images for your very first post but you want square images ((without automatic cropping)) to show up instead, then you would do this) so they will set the featured images.
Check your WordPress Settings + Update
You’ll want to double check that all your settings are set correctly! Do the following things to setup your website:
- Login now and change your password. Go to the Login URL > Add your temporary username and password > Once you login, this is your WordPress dashboard > On the left side of your dashboard find “Users” > Click All Users > Find your name > Edit > Fill in the information here about yourself (like a profile) > Scroll to bottom to Password > Click Show Password > Remove the random password by deleting it and entering your own > Save.
- Change to your timezone. Go to Settings (on the left side of the dashboard) > General > Change Timezone from dropdown > Save Changes.
